A single shaft of light descends from a narrow opening high above, cutting through the amber darkness of Antelope Canyon and exploding into a brilliant starburst on the sandy floor below. This phenomenon — known as a light beam or light shaft — occurs only on clear days around midday during the summer months, when the sun reaches an angle that allows it to penetrate the canyon's narrow slot directly from above. The walls surrounding it glow, catching the scattered light with extraordinary warmth. It is among the most fleeting and sought-after images in nature photography — and one of the most difficult to time.
